🏛️ About the Institute

NIT Sikkim currently operates from a temporary campus in Ravangla, a tourist town in South Sikkim situated at an altitude of 2100 meters.

  • The Vibe: The campus is known for its breathtaking scenic beauty, surrounded by the Himalayas. It provides a serene, pollution-free environment for studies but faces challenges due to limited space and harsh weather (cold winters).
  • Infrastructure: Being a temporary campus, infrastructure is limited compared to established NITs. However, it has supercomputing facilities (PARAM Kanchenjunga), decent hostels, and laboratories.
  • Connectivity: It is one of the most remote NITs.
    • Rail: 118 km from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station.
    • Air: 132 km from Bagdogra Airport.
    • Note: The journey from NJP/Bagdogra to Ravangla takes 4-5 hours by road.

⚠️ CRITICAL ADMISSION ALERT: Branch Change Rules

Policy Status for 2026:

NIT Sikkim ALLOWS branch change after the 1st Year, but with strict conditions.

  • Eligibility:
    • CGPA ≥ 7.0 at the end of the 1st Year (2nd Semester).
    • No backlogs allowed.
    • Seat Availability: Branch change is subject to vacancy. The strength of a branch cannot exceed its sanctioned intake or fall below 80% (for small branches) or 70% (for large branches).
    • Special Case: Students with CGPA ≥ 9.0 might be permitted to change branch even if it violates the strength rule, as per merit.
  • Advice: While 7.0 CGPA is the minimum, competitive branches like CSE usually require much higher CGPA (8.5+).

🎓 B.Tech Branches (Seat Matrix)

Admission is based on JEE Main ranks. The institute reserves 50% seats for Sikkim Home State candidates and 50% for Other States.

Branches Offered:

  • Computer Science & Engineering (CSE)
  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI&ML) New & High Demand
  • Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE)
  • Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE)

📈 Placements (2024-25 Reports)

NIT Sikkim is a developing institute. While it hasn’t hit the massive packages of older NITs yet, it provides decent opportunities for students who work hard.

  • Highest Package: ~₹18 – 20 LPA (Recent Trends)
  • Average Package (Overall): ~₹8 LPA
  • CSE Average Package: ~₹10 – 12 LPA
  • Top Recruiters: Intel, Microsoft, Deloitte, Capgemini, Infosys, L&T.
  • Placement Reality: Placement percentage is decent for CSE/ECE/EEE. Core branches face challenges due to location constraints for companies visiting campus.

💡 Guruvel Verdict

“NIT Sikkim is a good choice for students with lower JEE ranks (40k – 60k+) who want the ‘NIT Tag’ and can adapt to a remote, hilly environment. The Branch Change rule (7.0 CGPA minimum) offers a ray of hope for those joining lower branches. However, be prepared for the temporary campus challenges and long travel times. Prioritize CSE/AI&ML/ECE here for better placement prospects.”
