🏛️ About the Institute

NIT Puducherry (NITPy) is one of the ten new NITs sanctioned in 2009. It is situated in Karaikal, a coastal town about 130 km south of Puducherry city.

  • Campus: The institute operates from its permanent 256-acre campus, which is lush green and features modern infrastructure including a new Science Block and upcoming Sports Complex.
  • Quota Speciality: Unlike other NITs, the 50% Home State Quota here is shared between candidates from Puducherry and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. This makes it a primary choice for island students.

    • Rail: 11 km from Karaikal Railway Station.
    • Air: ~135 km from Puducherry Airport / ~162 km from Trichy Airport.

⚠️ CRITICAL ADMISSION ALERT: No Branch Change

Policy Status for 2026:

NIT Puducherry DOES NOT allow Branch Change.

  • The Rule: “The change of branch from the admitted one is not permitted.”
  • Strategy: Do not join a branch like Civil Engineering with the hope of sliding into CSE after the first year. Your branch allocation in JoSAA is final. However, you can take Minor courses in other branches (e.g., a Civil student can take a Minor in CSE) under the new NEP curriculum.

🎓 B.Tech Branches (Seat Matrix)

💡 Guruvel Verdict

“NIT Puducherry is a solid choice for students who want a peaceful, developing campus with the NIT tag. The Home State Quota is a goldmine for students from Andaman & Nicobar who often get seats at lower ranks here. For Other State students, the ‘No Branch Change’ rule is the main constraint—choose this college only if you are getting your preferred branch (CSE/ECE/EEE).”
